Cooking Well for Healthy Blood Pressure (3 part series, 3 of 3)

Cooking Well for Healthy Blood Pressure is a cooking school designed to help people with high blood pressure (hypertension) or pre-high blood pressure (pre-hypertension) and anyone that prepares food for them.  Cooking Well for Healthy Blood Pressure will be delivered in three evening sessions packed with researched based information on management and prevention of high blood pressure and delicious high blood pressure friendly recipes.  Classes will be held June 4th, 11th, & 18th, from 5:30 – 7:30.

Topics include:

  • Topic 1 – June 4th: DASHING Your Way to Improved Health
    This lesson focuses on incorporating the DASH plan as part of a healthy lifestyle with an emphasis on foods that help lower high blood pressure, as well as adding physical activity into daily routines.
  • Topic 2 – June 11th: A Virtual Grocery Store Tour
    This lesson provides information for everyday living for healthy blood pressure by virtually touring a grocery store. The emphasis will be on making food choices to include mineral rich fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy,as well as those that are lower in sodium. Learning to read and compare nutrition labels will benefit the consumer when making food product decisions.
  • Topic 3 – June 18th: Cooking with Spices and Herbs
    Using herbs and spices to reduce salt, fat, and sugar in recipes will be the lesson focus. The great thing about herbs and spices is that when they are used in cooking, we can improve both taste and nutrition while cutting back on salt, fat, and sugar.

Following instruction, participants will get hands-on experience cooking a variety a healthy dishes and learn how to incorporate them into their meal plans.

$25 per person or $40 per couple.  There is a limited number of scholarships available on a first-come, first serve basis to cover costs for those needing financial assistance
