All interested 4-H members are invited to come experience a hands-on workshop to experience the Food Challenge* contest. We will start out with a brief overview of the contest and review of kitchen safety, followed by a full-length contest practice. There will be an opportunity for teams to practice both preparing and presenting their dish.
We will provide pizza or chili and drinks. Cost is $3/kid, not to exceed $6 per family. Please bring check or exact change.
Please RSVP to joel.redus@ag.tamu.edu with participants’ name, club, grade level, and team members, if applicable. Early RSVPs provide for a better workshop, so don’t delay!
Stuff to know:
Stuff to bring (if you have it)
*Food Challenge Basics: Teams of 3 to 4 youth receive a key ingredient with access to additional pantry items and have 40 minutes to create a dish. The teams then present their dish to judges and are scored on preparation, nutrition, serving size, food safety, creativity, teamwork, and cost analysis. Similar to popular cooking contest shows, like “Iron Chef”, except kids work in teams and place more emphasis on nutritional value and food safety. Full contest rules, supply box list, leader guides, example videos and more can be found at https://texas4-h.tamu.edu/projects/food-nutrition/.
